What is Ares?

Ares is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing program.  This means that you can share audio, visual, and other kinds of files with others.  Basically, you decide what you are looking for–whether this is a song, video, PDF file, or whatever–and get on the Ares P2P network to see if someone has it and wants to share.  Chances are they do.

A big deal has been made out of music trading on P2P networks such as Ares.  What many people don’t realize (because they never hear about it) is that these kinds of file sharing networks are good for more than just swapping music.  They are good for sharing not just video, but PDF files and software as well.

You can find a wide variety of free and shared software on a network like Ares.  People build freeware and shareware open source software to be spread around among the populace.  Typically, these are programmers who love doing what they do.  Distributing quality software that doesn’t make corporations rich, and enhances the lives of users, is exactly what the open source ethic is about.

Of course, most people don’t come to Ares to find software–they want music and video.  And that’s fine. After all, there is plenty of that in the network!  Ares is known for finding some of the most niche specific and hard to find music.  Plus, it’s easy to look up.

But Ares isn’t just a file downloading structure.  True to the nature of Web 2.0, it is a social software as well.  Chat rooms are provided so that if you don’t find the files you want, you can ask around and see if anyone would be interested in “seeding” (uploading) them.
