My Thoughts After Visiting A Dog Food Manufacturing Plant

March 6th, 2010 by admin

When I am posting on a dog food forum or and sort of dog food review site, my opinions differ from time to time with many posts because I’ve had the privilege of going inside a Dog Food manufacturing plant.  And that look inside shed light on a lot of marketing niches inside the pet food industry that are simply false.  Maybe I go overboard at times, but I mean well.  Thanks for allowing me on your site, I think it gives great in-site when members can read through the crossfires.

After seeing how dog food is made, you would be surprised that there is only a handful of dog food rendering plants in the country.  And believe it or not, your Premium & Grocery brands use these same supplies for the meals used to go into the extruders.  The idea of holistic & human grade ingredients really don’t exist in the pet food world.  It’s a sales ploy and can be stamped on any bag of food.  Even if you were to email a company like Natura or Orijen they would tell you that their rendering company of choice is private information.  That’s kind of interesting if a company is really using such holistic stuff right.

In then end, what you need to do is buy the highest quality food that you can afford, but don’t get suckered in to buying “human grade” dog food, because it does not exist.  Foods like Orijen and Acana are great.  The Honest Kitchen also makes a solid dog food so that is worth considering as well.
