Benefits Should be Limited Only to Qualified Persons

June 28th, 2010 by admin

Sometimes, especially at the end of a pretty long and tiring week, I find myself wondering if all this work really is worth it. After all, while my work hours aren’t impossible, they’re pretty substantial. And the work itself can be pretty mentally and physically draining. But really, that should be fine if that were all. What really bothers me though is that I’m putting in all this work, and yet when my paycheck arrives, I ask myself whether the salary I’m being paid is even close to being enough to reward me for my efforts.

I guess that I got to thinking about this after I read a few news reports about a number of benefit fraud cases which are catching public attention. It’s almost as if there’s a pattern there really. Someone applies for a benefit, and at the time of application, he or she really qualifies so there’s no problem there. But then later, things change so the person’s no longer qualified. Unfortunately, the person continues to receive the benefit, because he or she doesn’t report the change in circumstances.

The cases I read about mostly involved single parent benefits, where a single mom had qualified for the benefit, but then later moved in with a partner, who was working. Now, I feel for single parents since they have to do so much alone, raise the kids, keep the family together, and so on. But for someone like me who’s struggling to keep things together, it just sometimes seems unfair that other people receive help from the government, even if they don’t deserve it, while I’m forced to make do on my own. It just doesn’t seem like that should be happening. It can be heartbreaking sometimes, having to make difficult choices because of the limited budget.
