Are Federation for American Immigration Reform Policies Feasible?

One of the most recognized faces on the illegal immigration debate is the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) – a non-profit organization that is working toward eliminated illegal immigration and even reducing the levels of legal immigration into the country. FAIR has detailed their goals on this issue, but the question is: how feasible are these policies?

The Federation for American Immigration Reform has stated that their goals are to end illegal immigration through stricter law enforcement and implementation of new and more advanced technology at the borders. They also want to set legal immigration to the lowest levels possible that will still be beneficial to the country.

So what, exactly, is their response to this question? How, exactly, do they believe they can accomplish this? The Federation For American Immigration Reform has suggested a few different ways to accomplish their goals. First of all, they lobby to shift public policy as much as their tax status allows. Second, they conduct research on the possible impact of the current level of immigration on the country’s economy, environment, and other factors and then distribute that information to media, political, and public outlets. Also, FAIR has stated that they believe a temporary moratorium on all immigration is required before we can hold a nation debate on the issue and devise a resolution to the problem.

So is it feasible to completely eliminate illegal immigration (not including the temporary moratorium)? This is where things get complex. Organizations on the opposite side of the spectrum say that it is not feasible – that the country actually relies on a certain level of illegal immigration as a cheap labor force, and they have recommended a complete amnesty for these people. It’s hard to say what answers are really feasible and what won’t work, but both sides will continue to put their goals first.
