On February 7th 2006, during our monthly meeting, we had a non-official visit of Lt.Col. Zanoni Garcia, Chief Commander of FAE's 22nd Wing, based in Guayaquil. He informed us about the coming event to celebrate FAE's day of air combat. Nothing else but an aerobatic show of Brazilian Air Force's aerobatic team Escuadrilha da Fumaça. Together, we also discussed the dates for our next XXI National Contest to be held at Simon Bolivar Air Base in Guayaquil.

As an introduction we must say that Col. Garcia started his career at Cosme Renella Air Force Training School in Salinas, flying the Beech T-34C Turbo Mentor. After graduation with a rank of under Lt., he was transferred to Eloy Alfaro's Air Base in Manta for his first jet training in the venerable AT-33A Shooting Star. He remained there until the "Tiburones" (Sharks) Squadron was disbanded due to retirement of the type from active service. He then was transferred to the 11th Transport Wing based in Quito and flew C-130Bs logistic transports. After graduating from the High Military Studies Academy, he was promoted as Wing Commander of 22nd Search and Rescue Air Wing in Guayaquil. He stays there in command of a short fleet of TH-57's helicopters. Col. Garcia has been a good friend of us for long time ago and he thank him very much for his visit.

During the meeting, we explained him the urgency of rescuing some FAE aircrafts that are part of our history and for different reasons are in very bad conditions in abandoned public parks or preserved with erroneous markings and colors. Col. Garcia took the initiative to form a team of mechanics within FAE's personnel to work in a restoration program for those aircrafts and under the guidance of IPMS Guayaquil. Also in this meeting, was born the idea of creating the new Air Museum and he was going to meet key decision authorities to get the land and authorization to materialize this project.
We sincerely thank Col. Garcia for his enthusiasm and continuous support to IPMS Guayaquil, and wish him the best in his new responsibilities.
