The Functional Consultant!

July 14th, 2010 by admin

A map is not functional until you know where you are on it. Consultants that objectively view their current reality always find a way to reduce confusion and misalignment. Agreement with yourself and your clients about what is true right now—in your company, in your project, in your life—is critical for making clear headway.

Get a Grip

There’s an old saying: “what you resist, you’re stuck with.” I’ve noticed this is particularly true with creative consultants and their work. If you’re not clear what your current job really is and you’ve skipped doing a complete and thorough inventory, you’re going to have a hard time making things happen for your client.

What is your job, right now! What is the main priority today? It is seldom as obvious as you might think. You can best answer that one question by answering these six:

1) What are your current tasks? These may be physical actions you need to take right now about your commitments and responsibilities: phone calls, e-mails, converstations, errands, brainstorming ideas, and so on. Typically a busy consultant can have as much as one or two hundred of these to do.

2) What are your current projects? These are the outcomes you have agreed with yourself to achieve, remeber you are an independent professional and must keep your word to yourself. There’s no one setting your agenda, in fact you are being paid to set it. Now, which of these outcomes requires more than one action to complete. Most consultants have between thirty and one hundred of these.

3) What, exactly, are your current areas of responsibility? Most consultants have ten or fifteen, like staff development, asset management, planning oversight, customer service, etc. But you’re NOT running, nor are you responsible for the WHOLE company. Leave that to the owner or CEO.

4) How are your consulting responsibilities and your personal affairs going to be changing over the next year? I’ve found that the truly effective, high dollar consultants I’ve known and worked with, have taken the time to mesh their work with their lives. You are a one person conglomerate, but also, a living-breathing human being that has ‘outside’ considerations for a well-rounded life. If you don’t consider consulting an extentsion of a real life, a flesh and blood existence, but rather, something altogether seperate, placed in a box called: ‘consulting work’, then you’ll fail most of the time and be very unhappy nearly all of the time.

5) How is this life I lead going to change over the next five years. This is the big picture question, the vision of how things should be, not necessarily how they will be, into the near future. Why is this important? Because, in the quest for the answer to our question above, namely, what is your job right now, we can get a nearly crystal clear answer when we extend our vision into a larger field. By this I mean, you can see if your current job selection is aiding you in your long-term visionary goal.

If you ocmplete a thorough inventory of the ocmmitments, issues, and projects that currently exist in your ocnsultancy and life on earth, espeically in these six areas, you will have a good definition of your work. This isn’t easy stuff, I know. I’ve spent over fifteen hours just identifying my work on two mundane levels: current actions and projects. But wihtout doing these things I don’t feel prepared, nor am I prepared to have conversation with my clients.

It’s all very useful work, however, should I need to re-calibrate my job description or deal with needed changes along the way. So many people have just a vague desription or ‘feeling’ about what they want to do or be in the future. But without a reality based reference point of where they are, right now, they are like the Flying Dutchman, doomed to drift.

So, know where you are on the map, so you can determine if you need to turn right or left.

Unemployment Benefits: Is it taxable or not?

July 10th, 2010 by admin

People have been confused about the latest law imposed by the government about unemployment benefits. According to the law, the first $2,400 of your unemployment benefits will not be taxed. However the conditions of what and how the benefits will be taxed is still a bit vague which is why the question, are unemployment benefits subject to income tax, is something the government was not able to resolve from yesterday’s meeting agenda. According to an insider, the House of Representatives and the Senate are still debating whether unemployment benefits not taxable should be increased to $4000 so that people can still have some money to use for their basic necessities. The Senate argued that since the benefits provided for the unemployed will just roll as the people will be using it to spend – for their food, shelter, transportation (when they look for a job), clothes, etc. Increasing the unemployment benefits not taxable will give the people the opportunity to spend. Previously, unemployment benefits were not taxed at all. The government has been lenient with the unemployment benefits law because the economy was prospering and the government has seen this as their way of giving back to the community. Though it was not taxable, the benefits were small because the basic commodities were also low and they do not want to encourage people to just continue accepting the benefits and not have the desire to work. Both government bodies did not arrive with a decision on how to deal with this matter. Other reports say that it might take a few more days before a resolution will be drawn up by two parties. The President is hopeful that the House and Senate will come up with their decision very soon as the income tax filing season is almost near. According to the President, people cannot be misled and everything has to be clear.

Worms in Dogs Guide: Roundworms

July 7th, 2010 by admin

Roundworms are one of the two very common infections of worms in dogs that are common in the UK. Like other types of worms in dogs, they are parasites that live in the dog’s gut and they feed on the partially digested food there, meaning that they take your pet’s food!

This type of worms in dogs is a big problem for puppies who are often born with an infestation, passed to them through the placenta in the womb or through their mother’s milk. Adult dogs can also become infected if they ingest eggs from soil which has been contaminated with the faeces of other infected dogs.

The roundworm, the most common worms in dogs to affect puppies, causes a pot bellied appearance amongst puppies and can even lead to death through intestinal blockage. Severe infestations often lead to poor growth.

It is very important therefore to treat dogs for worms regularly and even more frequently for puppies. Alarmingly, this type of worms in dogs can infest humans if they ingest larvae after coming into contact with infected soil and not washing their hands adequately. Children are particularly susceptible and if larvae migrate around their bodies and reach the back of the retina then permanent damage to eye sight and even sight loss may be caused. Because human health as well as dog health is at risk from this type of worms in dogs, it is an important matter of public health that dogs are regularly wormed and that owners pick up after their pets.

Job Sites and Finding a Job

July 6th, 2010 by admin

If you are seriously searching for career opportunities, but you have no idea where to look, you may be just one of the thousands of unemployed people in the country. However, finding jobsis easy when you know where to search.

Where can you find employers? How can you find your desired local job?

Before anything else, you should determine your skills and abilities, update your resume and be ready to face the employment process. There are several options on where to find employment.

1) Job Center: Job centers provide numerous vacancies for different kinds of work. Majority of job centers update their employment board frequently.

Originally, these career centers cater to young jobseekers up to 21 years old. They arrange for appropriate job interviews, which they believe, would match your skills and abilities. Some job centers also process training vacancies and apprenticeships to young people. Today, these centers also cater adults’ need of employment.

2) Newspapers: Local and national newspapers, non-profit papers and job hunting newspapers provide advertisements on current job vacancies. You could find all the existing newspapers in libraries and check all the recent job postings.

Majority of newspapers today have their content available online. You could browse through them one by one and list all the jobs you prefer.

3) Journals and magazines: Every industry has their own periodicals, magazines or journals. Most employers go to these publications for employing professionals. Some could be bought in magazine stands and others come by subscription. Therefore, if you are hoping to establish your career based on your finished field of study, you could subscribe to a professional magazine and increase your local job prospects.

4) Agencies: Employment agencies handle most of vacant local work. Covering all kinds of work for various industries, these agencies are listed in local directories and Yellow pages.

5) Employer grounds: Many companies have job vacancies on their premises. Since these companies such as food retailers make use of internal notice boards, they do not advertise in newspapers and agencies. You could walk into these companies and ask the front desk for employment vacancies.

6) Internet: The most cost-effective way in finding local jobs is through job sites. Majority of employment agencies, newspapers, top companies, magazines and job centers have their own website. You could save time by searching through them one by one and apply for the job you prefer the most.

Choosing a Waste Management Service

July 4th, 2010 by admin

There are many things to evaluate when you are deciding which waste management service to use.  On the surface, all the companies may appear alike, but there is often differences in the service provided.  How often do they come?  Is this schedule convenient you you?  Do they generally come at the same time every time they come to collect your waste?  Do you have to separate the garbage, or does the waste service do this?  What is the maximum amount of waste you are allowed to put out?  Are you restricted in how many bins can be put out?  Do you have to put out certain kinds of bins, that can only be bought in a few specific places?

In researching waste collection services, it is important to contact current (and past, if possible) clients.  These are the only people who can truthfully tell you how reliable the service is.  Although the waste disposal service may have certain days of the week they come, and set out a specific time that they will arrive, only current customers can tell you if they stick to that schedule.  Additionally, current customers can tell you how the waste service handles your garbage.  All services remove garbage, but not all services have employees who conscientiously put garbage bins back in their place so they do not roll down the street.  Current customers can also tell you how well the garbage is removed.  Is the garbage picked up so they street is clean after trash pick up, or does garbage often blow away or fall off the truck and mar the neighborhood.  Current customers can also tell you how well the garbage company handles situations when problems arise. Did they handle is quickly, in a courteous way. or was it hard to find someone to take responsibility for the problem and resolve it?

Often, many of us do not even notice who collects our rubbish, until problems arise.  If you spend a little time researching which is the right trash service for you, you can save yourself time and trouble later on and insure your trash pick-up is seamless.

Ares File Sharing Software

July 3rd, 2010 by admin

The wealth of file sharing programs available for use can be quite overwhelming to the uninformed user. There are many unsafe programs found on the web that promise easy file sharing but instead fill your computer with viruses, spy-ware, and unwanted files. Choosing a reliable and safe program is easy if you do your research properly. There is a new free file sharing program that protects users while allowing them to share digital files called Ares. You can get an Ares free download at the official user site or other trusted download sites. It is important to be weary of any unofficial sites as downloading from some of these sites can cause irreversible damage to your computer. Many of the file sharing websites that begin with torrent in their URL are guilty of these sort of illegal practices.

Ares is a free file sharing program that allows users to share all kinds of digital files, including documents, images, audio files, video, and programs. To share files, users must join the Ares peer-to-peer network. Once they are a member, users can download almost any file shared by other users. But Ares is not just a file sharing network, but a virtual community where users can chat with each other and make new friends.

Ares is faster than other file sharing programs because it can download files from more than one user at once. Ares also automatically finds users with the fastest download time. Users can keep their files organized with a library system that allows for keyword searches. While waiting for files to download, users can preview files and listen to Internet radio with the program’s built-in audio/video player. The chat feature allows users to share information about digital files or simply chat about their favorite movies or music.

To ensure a safer download Ares contains many built-in safety features. Ares works behind a firewall, which keeps out unwanted programs such as viruses or spy-ware. Also, users can only see files that are in shared folders, so users cannot access the files users want to keep safe. With the unique chat feature, users can get to know the people they are downloading from and avoid malignant software.
