The very first thing to do is not to put cigars inside. It is an absolute must to season a new humidor before storing your dear cigars. This is true for an old humidor that hasn’t been used in a while. The cedar within a humidor is a part of the humidification system, and acts to provide humidity to the cigars. If the cedar hasn’t been seasoned, then the wood will basically take moisture from the cigars, and dry them out. This is the reason you decided to buy a humidor in the first place.

To season the humidor you will need distilled water and an unscented sponge or cloth. DO NOT substitute distilled water with tap water. Dampen your sponge with distilled water and wipe down the cedar wood inside the humidor as well as the lid and any trays.

Place the wet sponge inside the humidor on a piece of cellophane or plastic. Make sure that the sponge is dot over saturated and that it is not touching any of the wood.

Next, fill your humidification device with either humidifying solution or distilled water refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for what is best for your specific humidor. Make sure that the device is not excessively saturated by letting any excess drip out into the sink. Then wipe of any drops of water on the exterior of the humidification device and place it in the humidor.

You have to wait 24 hours and then repeat. The following day, repeat the wipe down process with distilled water and sponge, but don’t leave the sponge inside this time. Wait another 24 hours.

Finally, check for dampness before adding your marsh wheeling cigars. On the day after the second treatment, it should be safe to use the humidor as long as you do not feel moistness on the cedar. If you feel any kind of dampness, you will need to wait another day before storing your cigars. If you have a hygrometer in the humidor, if the humidity is lower than 72% on the day following the second treatment, repeat the process for a third time and test your hygrometer for the appropriate humidity level.
